Types of freight transport: what are they? And what differentiates them?

Types of freight transport: what are they? And what differentiates them?

When it comes to logistics, one of the most important aspects is the transport of goods. Each type of transport has unique characteristics that make it suitable for specific needs. But what are these types and what distinguishes one from the other? Let’s find out together.

What are the various types of transport?

In the world of logistics, goods can be transported using different means. The main types of transport are:

      • Air transport: ideal for quick, long-distance shipments.
      • Ship transport: used for large quantities of goods, especially on intercontinental routes.
      • Rail transport: a sustainable and effective solution for land transport.
      • Road transport: the most flexible, suitable for short and medium distances.

Each means has advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on factors such as distance, type of goods and cost.

Primary and secondary transport: what are the differences?

An important distinction in the logistics sector concerns primary and secondary transport. Let’s see in detail what they are:

      • Primary transport: concerns the transfer of goods from production centres to large distribution centres. It is characterised by high volumes and generally longer routes.
      • Secondary transport: refers to the final distribution of goods to points of sale or consumers. It usually involves shorter routes and smaller loads.

The effective combination of these two types of transport is essential for efficient logistics.

      The characteristics of air transport

Air transport is synonymous with speed. Its main characteristics include:

      • Speed: perfect for perishable or urgent goods.
      • Global coverage: allows almost any part of the world to be connected.
      • High costs: it is generally more expensive than other modes.
      • Weight and volume limitations: mainly suitable for light and small loads.

      Types of means used

      • Dedicated cargo aircraft.
      • Passenger aircraft with cargo spaces.

      The characteristics of shipping

Shipping is one of the pillars of international trade. Its special features include:

      • High capacity: large quantities of goods can be transported.
      • Cheapness: the cost per unit of goods is relatively low.
      • Long lead times: it is less rapid compared to other modes.
      • Dependence on port infrastructure: it requires an efficient network of ports and connections.

      Types of means used

      • Container ships.
      • Cargo ships for bulk goods.
      • Tankers for liquids.

      The characteristics of rail transport

Rail transport is a sustainable and reliable solution. Its main characteristics include:

      • Efficiency over long distances: ideal for the overland transport of large quantities.
      • Low operating costs: compared to road transport.
      • Environmental sustainability: it is one of the most environmentally friendly means of transport.
      • Route rigidity: it is limited to the presence of railway lines.

      Types of means used

      • Traditional goods trains.
      • Intermodal trains for containers.
      • Refrigerated trains for perishable goods.

      The characteristics of road transport

Road transport is the most widespread due to its flexibility. Here are its peculiarities:

      • Capillarity: makes it possible to reach practically any destination.
      • Adaptability: perfect for short and medium distances.
      • Fast delivery times: for relatively short distances.
      • Environmental impact: it is less sustainable than other modes.

      Types of vehicles used

      • Standard trucks.
      • Refrigerated vans.
      • Car transporters.

What is the best solution for transporting cars?

Automotive logistics is undoubtedly one of the most complex in the transport sector. That is why specific skills are required to take into account numerous factors that can jeopardise the safe delivery of goods.

The most common method is transport by car transporter, a vehicle specially designed for the transport of cars. The car transporter guarantees safety, punctuality and flexibility. In addition, an extensive network of forecourts makes it possible to cover an entire territory in a capillary manner, being able to reach even the most complex areas.

In addition to road transport, automotive logistics also makes use of other modes such as rail. Or in some cases intermodal transport, a technique that involves the use of two or more different modes of transport, such as rail, road, sea and air, within a single transport operation. In other words, it is an integrated system in which cargo is moved from one means of transport to another without having to be handled directly.
