Special-purpose and specific-use vehicles: what they are and what features they have

Special-purpose and specific-use vehicles: what they are and what features they have

In the automotive and transport sectors, there are several categories of vehicles, each with its own functions and technical characteristics. Among these, special-purpose or specific-use vehicles occupy a unique role because they are designed or adapted to perform precise tasks that go beyond the simple transport of people or goods. In this article, we will look at how vehicles are classified and what these terms mean.

      How are vehicles classified?

Vehicle classification is defined by the Italian Highway Code and is based on technical and functional criteria. In general, vehicles can be divided into:

      • Motor vehicles: including cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks, tractors and operating machines.

      • Towed vehicles: such as trailers and semi-trailers.

      • Non-motorized vehicles: bicycles and towed vehicles.

Depending on their use and structure, motor vehicles are further divided into:

      • Vehicles for transporting people (cars, buses, minibuses).

      • Vehicles for transporting goods (trucks, road trains, vans).

      • Special-purpose vehicles and vehicles intended for specific types of transport, which include vehicles designed or equipped for particular applications.

This distinction is essential not only for technical reasons but also for homologation, circulation, and compliance with tax and insurance regulations.

      What are specific-use vehicles?

According to Article 54, paragraph 1, letter f of the Italian Highway Code, vehicles for specific use are motor vehicles equipped with special fittings or equipment that make them suitable for particular functions.

In other words, these are not vehicles designed for the general transport of people or goods, but vehicles intended for specific public or private services.

Some examples of special-use vehicles include:

      • Ambulances and medical emergency vehicles

      • Fire department trucks

      • Police and Carabinieri vehicles

      • Tow trucks and roadside assistance vehicles

      • Mobile shops and mobile laboratories

      • Trucks equipped with cranes or lifting platforms

Each special-use vehicle must comply with specific technical and homologation requirements, as any structural modifications or installed fittings affect weight, dimensions, and intended use.

      What are special-purpose vehicles?

Special-purpose vehicles, on the other hand, are vehicles permanently equipped with special tools and primarily intended for their own operational use.

Here are some examples of special-purpose vehicles according to the Italian Highway Code:

      • Motor caravans (campers): vehicles intended for mobile accommodation.

      • Funeral vehicles: used for transporting coffins.

      • Mobile shops and promotional vehicles: equipped for itinerant commercial activities.

      • Vehicles for people with disabilities: adapted for transporting or allowing the driving of people with reduced mobility.

      • Vehicles for road maintenance or technical services: equipped with cranes, platforms, generators, pumps, or other work tools.

These vehicles must be specifically approved and registered as “special-purpose vehicles,” with the designation clearly stated on the vehicle registration document. Additionally, the equipment cannot be modified without authorization, otherwise the vehicle loses its homologation.

Special-use and special-purpose vehicles represent an essential category for professional mobility and public service operations. From ambulances to tow trucks, from campers to mobile shops, each vehicle is designed to meet specific operational needs.

Understanding the characteristics of these vehicle types is important not only for those working in the automotive sector but also for professionals in logistics, vehicle outfitting, and fleet management.
