      ITUs in logistics: what they are and what are the benefits?

      ITUs in logistics: what they are and what are the benefits?

      In the logistics and transport sector, efficiency in goods handling is a strategic factor. In this context, ITUs (Intermodal Transport Units) represent a key tool for optimizing flows, costs, and sustainability. Primarily used in intermodal transport, ITUs allow goods to be transferred between different modes of transport without direct handling, reducing time and operational risks.

      Understanding what ITUs are and how they fit into modern logistics is essential for companies operating on both national and international routes.

      What are ITUs in logistics?

      ITUs – Intermodal Transport Units – are standardized units designed to contain goods and be easily transferred between different transport systems (road, rail, sea, or inland waterway) without the need to unload the cargo.

      The main types of ITUs include:

      • ISO containers, mainly used in maritime and rail transport

      • Swap bodies, widely used in combined road–rail transport

      • Intermodal semi-trailers, compatible with rail transport

      ITUs are characterized by standardized dimensions, specific handling points (such as grapples or twist locks), and a structure designed to ensure safety, cargo protection, and compatibility across different transport modes.

      From an operational perspective, the use of ITUs makes it possible to:

      • reduce loading and unloading times;

      • limit the risk of cargo damage;

      • improve traceability along the supply chain;

      • increase efficiency in intermodal terminals.

      What does intermodal transport mean?

      Intermodal transport is a freight transport method that involves the use of two or more different modes of transport (for example, truck and train, or ship and truck), using the same ITU for the entire journey.

      Unlike multimodal transport, in intermodal transport each leg of the journey is governed by a separate transport contract, while the cargo always remains inside the same unit. This approach makes it possible to leverage the strengths of each transport mode:

      • the flexibility of road transport for the first and last mile;

      • the capacity and efficiency of rail for long distances;

      • the cost-effectiveness of maritime transport for international traffic.

      The integration of ITUs into intermodal transport offers numerous advantages, including:

      • reduction of CO₂ emissions;

      • optimization of logistics costs;

      • greater delivery reliability;

      • reduced road traffic congestion.

      For these reasons, intermodal transport based on the use of ITUs is now an increasingly adopted solution in sustainable logistics strategies and in European and international transport systems.

      Thanks to a structured logistics network and continuous investment in technological innovation, Escargo demonstrates that intermodal transport represents a solution that is not only environmentally sustainable, but also efficient and economically competitive.
